A place called HOME

[ Restaurant HOME]

It’s now two weeks from Chinese New Year (CNY), are you ready? At this moment of time, people would be busy packing their homes, cleaning, buying new clothes or probably “nua-ing” around doing nothing but me? I’m busy eating.. Haha..

Let me introduce you to this Chinese restaurant, HOME. You might consider having your CNY reunion dinner here. HOME, which was situated in Changi area   and surrounded by greenery (鸟语花香), it’s a great place to chill at without much disturbance from the public.

Manned by one of the celebrity chef, Chef Tan Yong Hua, his dishes were all well executed and you definitely feel like home while dining there. It’s an honor for me and my fellow foodies to be invited to try out their CNY Prosperous Menu E, priced at $558+ (8pax) $688+ (10pax) before actual festive day comes. There were also a few other menus to choose from, which caters to different group sizes. All items on the menu was Chef Tan’s signatures.

We started off our lunch with first course: Yu Sheng with Norwegian Salmon. Look at how generous the amount of salmon for our table to ! Huat ah! We were all very happy after receiving all the auspicious blessings from the waitress who served us our Yu Sheng. I also love the candied tangerine peel bits in the heap of veg.

The Double-boiled Amidori Abalone with Chicken and Night Blooming Cereus Soup that we had thereafter wows me too. The clear-colored soup looked pretty ordinary but it was sweet and full of flavours. It was also the first time I ate the flower of dragon fruit. It’s said to have detox effects and cooling down of our internal body heat.

Barbecued Duck with Lychee Wood did not leave an impression. Somehow I felt it tasted normal but better with the plum sauce.

Braised Green Wrasse with Roast Pork, Leek and Flower Mushrooms. This dish  was my 2nd wow! The fish was really fresh. Deep fried till crispy and drizzled over with Chef’s special sauce, I love this creation.

Next came the “oink oink”. Duet of Pork Ribs with Barbecued sauce and Stir-fried Kai Lan with Preserved Meat. The coat of bbq sauce around the ribs was a little too sweet for me, like eating malt candy. But it pairs really well with the lightly seasoned greens. Kai lan tastes good on its own too with the help of the chinese sausages.

Pan-fried King Prawns with Superior Soy Sauce was one of my favourite too. “Har Lok” cooking method goes with everything for me. Prawn meat texture was firm and crunchy too!

Finally, we come to the last main dish on this menu which was Fragrant Rice with Dried Scallop and Preserved Meat wrapped in Lotus Leaf. Every piece of grain carried the nice lotus leaf smell which you couldn’t resist. Each mouthful filled with generous dried scallops and preserved meat, so flavorful and good. A person like me who hated carbo actually licked clean this bowl. You guys should really try this.

Dessert was Black Sesame Glutinous Rice Ball in Longan Red Dates Tea. A usual dessert i see in most Chinese restaurants, especially at wedding banquets. Longan Tea was again pretty sweet, probably the Chef wanted you all to feel 甜蜜蜜 after eating.

We tried out something adventurous, not in CNY menu, which you might want to think twice before ordering. Mala Pork Lard, $10.00 for a small portion. Stir-fried bell peppers, onions with heaps of pork lard and nothing else. If you’re a Lard person, this sinful indulgence was meant for you.

Last but not least, we tried out a new collaboration between Chef Tan’s Signature Pork Rib dish plus Taverner’s Dessert Honey Mead. Also Taverner’s Honey Ale from the start of our meal. 20 years in the market and going strong. Wanna know how it tasted? They’re available on Red Mart and Lazada.

Overall dining experience here was pretty cool, with green surrounds and herbs garden in the backyard. Although its a little out of area, easier if you drive, but it’s definitely comfort food that your family would love to have during festive periods or even on a normal day. Friendliness of the chef and family, attentiveness of the staff, tasty food together with reasonable price charts, it’s surely a great place for gatherings. This was my first visit and definitely not the last.
